How to create multiple groups in Tally ERP 9?


We have completed multiple ledger creation in our previous lesson, Now we are going to discuss how multiple groups are created. This is similar to multiple ledger creation.  Tally has 28 Pre defined groups .All groups required for a normal business is covered in it.


If your business demands further classification of groups or sub classification of group’s .You can do it easily with tally. Tally ERP9 provide advanced facility of creating groups under already existing groups from a single screen.

What is the needs of Sub groups

We can utilize sub groups in reporting. For Example we are grouping sales of an electronic retailer compnay into the following way



Main Group :  Sales Account

……………..Sub Group : Television Sale

………………………….Sub Group of Television Sale : Samsung Television Sale

………………………….Sub group of Television Sale : LG Television sale

………………………….Sub Group of Television Sale : Sony Television Sale

In the above hierarchy of groups you can easily identify the following things.

Total sale of the company
Out of the total sale how much is the total television sale
Out of total Television sale what are the total sale of Samsung Tv,LG Tv and Sony Tv.
How to create multiple groups in tally under a single group

Let’s take the following example, Create sub ledger Television sale, Refrigeration sale, Laptop sale under Single group Sales Account.

New Groups to be created Under which group
Television sale Sales Account
Refrigeration sale Sales Account
Laptop sale Sales Account


Go to Gateway of Tally>>Accounts info>>Groups>>Create

Select CReate Under Multiple groups


The next screen is called Multi group creation screen. At top most left of the screen there is a n option asking “Under group”. This means that in which group the newly creating groups comes under?

In our example we need sub groups for sales account, so select the “Sales Account” there. In the next field Name of Group Type New group name “Television sale”. Next field “Under “will be filled automatically. Enter the entire sub group in the same manner.

Save the screen by pressing enter. Multi group creation under single Group is completed

Multiple Group creation under different groups

Let’s take the following example, Assume that we have already created the sub group, Television sale, Refrigeration sale, Laptop sale using above method. Now we want to classify the sale group again in accordance with the brand sale as under.

New Groups to be created Under  (group)
LG TV sales Television sale
Samsung TV sales Television sale
Samsung Fridge sales Refrigeration sale
LG fridge sales Refrigeration sale
Sony Laptop sales Laptop sale
Acer Laptop Sales Laptop Sale
Go to

Gateway of Tally>>Accounts info>>Groups>>Create

Select CReate Under Multiple groups

Now you will have Multi Group Creation Screen

Select All items in the field “Under Group”. This is the important point to note while creating Multi group under different groups.

Select all item under group

Now enter the Name of new sub group, Under Name of Group, in our example LG TV sales

Press enter to move on to next field called “Under “. Select Main group name from the list “Television sales “is the group our example.

Enter all the new sub group name and main group name as in below image.


Now press enter to save the screen, Multi group creation under single group and different group is completed.
