Social Media: A Field of Dreams?

A huge misconception of social media is that if you build it they will come. This is not field of dreams. In addition, joining social media networks is not like advertising. You must be proactive and reach out to fellow group members, network and create those relationships. It is those relationships that assist in leading to new business opportunities. Merely joining a group or building a profile does not lead to new business.

There are a lot “social media experts” out there, so I will spare you another blog about the benefits of social media like Twitter, LinkedIn and Facebook. If I never read another blog post about the benefits of social media I will be a happy man. What lacks in many of these articles and blog posts about social media is how to effectively utilize the medium. Joining groups and networking within LinkedIn is just one way to benefit your firm brand and your personal brand. However, let’s take a closer look at the applications that are offered to the legal profession. Less attention has been paid to this important segment of social media.

Legal Updates

Developed by JD Supra, Legal Updates is a good way to stay abreast to legal issues. Customizable, this app allows you to follow relevant news to you and your firm. Take this app one step further and connect with lawyers who are posting articles and doing similar work as you. Your clients look to you for your expertise. If you are not updated on current legal news, then most likely your clients are not.

Lawyer Ratings

This app brings your written credentials to life on your LinkedIn profiles with the network, Martindale Hubbell. A fixture in the legal community, this application is sure to draw the attention of the visitors to your profile. Whether it is the Client Review Ratings™ or the Peer Review Ratings™, this app will help to connect you with clients and prospective clients.

Of course, these are just a couple applications available. I find them essential for legal marketing and law firm social medium. Research is being done via LinkedIn. Clients and prospective clients are using LinkedIn to find information about their law firm team. For me personally, I typically start with LinkedIn and branch out from there. The amount of info you can find out about a current or potential client can go a long way in creating long-term partnerships. I am always impressed when I speak with someone new that mentions something they read in my profile. Be different and explore additions, like apps, to your social media strategy.

What part of your social media strategy is unique or different from the typical?
