Transferring files over SSH

Secure copy or SCP is a means of securely transferring computer files between a local host and a remote host or between two remote hosts. It is based on the Secure Shell (SSH) protocol.

# copy from local machine to remote machine
scp localfile user@host:/path/to/whereyouwant/thefile

or

# copy from remote machine to local machine
scp user@host:/path/to/remotefile localfile
